Origin History

The Serbian Tricolour Hound is considered a relatively young and little-known breed. It was bred in the early 20th century in southern Yugoslavia. It was not considered an independent breed; it was treated as a special variety of the Serbian Hound. Like its close relatives, the Serbian Tricolour Hound also played an indispensable assistant in hunting hares and deer. Opinions of the breed connoisseurs, who refer the Serbian Tricolour Hound to the ancient breeds, do not find official scientific confirmation.

The breed received its standard only in 1946 when it was no longer referred to as a variety of the Serbian Hound. However, official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale was adopted in 1961. Then the name of the breed – “Yugoslavian Tricolour Hound” was affirmed. But after 1991 (at the time of the division of Yugoslavia), the breed suffered the same fate as the Serbian Hound – the name was changed again and remained with the breed today. The United Hound Club renamed the breed “Serbian Tricolour Hound” only in 2006. In Serbia and Bosnia, the Serbian Tricolour Hound is appreciated among hunters and large families. Nowadays, the breed is increasingly being acquired as a pet without developing its inherent hunting instincts.

Appearance

The main distinguishing feature of the Yugoslavian Tricolour Hound the Serbian Hound is the color. If in the Serbian Hound, two colors are mandatory, in the Serbian Tricolour Hound respectively three. Wool is short and thick with the characteristic fox color and black checkered coat, where white spots on muzzle, neck, chest, paw tips, and tail are obligatory. The Serbian Tricolour Hound is a medium-sized dog with an elongated and strong body. It has a small and slightly long wedge-shaped muzzle. A strong back and taut belly. The ears are thin and floppy, not creased. The tail is straight and saber-shaped.

Care

The Serbian Tricolour Hound’s short coat is well adapted to all weather conditions. It has dirt-repellent properties, which are very useful in hunting. That is why frequent water procedures are not required; you need to wipe it with a wet towel. Comb out the coat once a week. Ideal for this is a special brush with smooth, soft bristles. Examine your dog’s ears and eyes regularly and keep an eye on their general condition to prevent infections or inflammations. Such an active dog’s nails will usually shave them off on their own, but if that’s not enough, have them trimmed monthly.

Training

Any obedient dog with a balanced character is a credit to the owner. You will need patience and persistence in raising the Serbian Tricolour Hound. It is intelligent and well-trained but can be stubborn at some points. It is active and attached to its owner. If you build up a rapport with him, he will soon show you new commands he learned wonderfully.

Common Diseases

Like its closest relative, the Serbian Tricolour Hound has a robust immune system. Researchers have not identified any hereditary diseases or propensities for serious illnesses in a long time of study of the breed. The only things that can be inherent in the breed are urolithiasis and ear inflammation (otitis media).

Nutrition

The diet of the Serbian Tricolour Hound must be balanced. It is necessary to feed the dog regularly because he spends a lot of energy per day and needs a normal amount of food. The daily ration of a dog with this weight should include about 400 g of lean meat and sometimes by-products. During the cold season and molting period, you need to increase vitamin intake. You can consult an experienced owner or veterinarian for advice.
