Origin History

The home of the Border Terrier is the border areas of England and Scotland. In the beginning, the dogs were used for hunting small animals such as foxes and badgers. Their size was perfectly suited for this purpose, which allowed them to get into caves without any problems.

The Border Terrier Club first appeared in 1920. By that time, the dog had already received its modern name and was widely used on farms and homes.

With their thick coat, the dogs could withstand all weather conditions well, and their long legs allowed them to keep up with the horses on the run. Nowadays, dogs are used as pets and even in nursing homes and hospitals.

Appearance

This terrier is considered the smallest of all working terriers. The weight can reach only 7 kg, and the height is no more than 40 cm. The physique is proportional and neat.

The hair of the border terrier is thick, stiff, and has an undercoat. It can be brown, red, wheat, blue and papal. Around the nose and on the ears, the color is often darker than on the body.

The Border Terrier has long paws that help him run fast. The dog has large, sharp teeth, has a beard on his muzzle, and eyebrows over his eyes. The eyes are dark in color.

Character

Border Terrier is a real family favorite. Most of all, he is loved by children. He is amiable, balanced, and wise. He loves to spend time with his family, play, run and walk.

Despite its small size, the pet is a true protector of the house; it will always rush into battle, and with courage, will guard its territory. This dog will gladly keep its owner company during long walks while hunting and fishing while jogging because they don’t like to be alone.

He treats other animals in the house positively, protects them, and considers them part of his pack. On walks can be malicious towards other dogs, but if you train them from an early age to behave properly, there should be no problems.

The Border Terrier is always in a good mood, so they are often used as therapy dogs. This dog can charge with positive emotions for the whole day.

One of the disadvantages of the breed is the constant need for affection and love. Dogs like to be the center of attention and receive the maximum amount of care.

Care

They can easily live in an apartment, but it is worth remembering about long walks and active games. This dog loves to run, jump and play a lot. It is vital to watch their actions. After all, small puppies can hurt themselves, and then in adulthood, there may be many problems with bones and joints.

Dogs have an excellent adaptation to any conditions. You can easily take it with you on vacations during long car rides.

A pet’s coat does not require any special care. It is enough to trim it twice a year (removal of dead hair) and brush it several times a week. It would help if you bathed your dog when it gets dirty.

To keep their teeth in good condition, they need to be brushed once a week. The Border Terrier loves to swim, and in the summertime, they will gladly swim in a lake, river, or pool.

Training

From an early age, you need to spend a lot of time socializing with your puppy. Walk him outside, introduce him to other people, dogs, and cats.

They are naturally intelligent and learn commands quickly. It is best to encourage them during training with something sweet and to praise them a lot if they obey. Do not raise your voice or shout.

Common Diseases

The dogs’ health is robust, and their immune system is healthy. If enough time is given to caring and proper nutrition, there should be no health problems. It is also important to remember about vaccinations and coat treatment against parasites.

In the border terrier can be observed such diseases:

  • hip dysplasia;
  • cataract;
  • allergies;
  • anomalies in cardiology.

Nutrition

It is recommended that the diet be made up of dry food. The dog can often be allergic to milk, beef, eggs, peas, chicken meat. In addition to these foods, others are poorly digested, such as potatoes.
