Origin History

The breed is native to Australia. Mists were the result of crossbreeding Burmese, Abyssinian, and domestic shorthair cats. In 1977, Trude Strayed’s breeder decided to breed a pure Australian breed with a Burmese color, Abyssinian ticking, and a regular cat’s spots. Three years later, the first representatives appeared and were called spotted mists. In 1992 the kittens of marbled color were born. They were dubbed Australian Mists.

For a long time, the animals lived exclusively in their homeland. Breeders used them to create fertile offspring. But in 2007, breeder Mary Stewart brought more than 200 of the breed to England. As they are also called, the Australian Mist Cats first appeared at the Yorkshire Show in 2009. Their popularity has grown considerably. Today, official permission for breeding the breed was received by the U.S. and Norway. And the international felinological organizations (WCF, GCCF, TIFA, and others) have officially recognized Australian Mist Cats.

Appearance

Australian Mists are medium-sized cats. The head is round and wedge-shaped. Large green eyes with straight eyelids. Wide ears slightly tilted forward and rounded closer to the end. Short straight nose. Taut body of medium size. Front paws are slightly shorter than hind paws. Fluffy medium-length tail.

Cats have a short, silky coat. The coloration consists of dark smoky, basic color and sepia. Chocolate, peach, gold, mauve, blue, brown, and caramel colors are officially allowed. The Australian Mist gets its final coloring by two years of age.

Care

Representatives of the breed lead a fairly measured life. They do not need walks and live well in apartments. In terms of care, cats are unpretentious. Mostly – because of the short hair. They take care of themselves. During active shedding, comb the cat with a special massage brush or wet hand. It is better to start the procedure early so that later the pet is not afraid. Every month, trim its claws and check its mouth for tartars. Check the eyes and ears every two weeks.

Education

As with any breed, it is advisable to educate the cat from an early age. Don’t forget to praise and treat. It will make the results even better. Never use violence, aggression, or intimidation. If you do, he will be frightened and will not respond. Allow time for activities and games. Australian Mist Cats are affectionate and will appreciate this.

Common Diseases

Representatives of the breed are endowed with good health, and genetic diseases are not common in them. The Australian Mist is a cat with strong immunity, which allows it to live up to 18 years. But you should not forget about vaccinations. Once every three months, give the pet medicine to prevent worming. If the animal does not eat well, loses weight – this is a sign that it is time to go to the veterinarian.

Nutrition

The Australian Mist tends to become obese. Therefore, the diet must be carefully monitored. It is recommended to feed a small kitten three or four times, an adult – twice a day. A diet consisting of industrial food will not suit him. For a pet, the more natural food, the better. Choose beef or poultry meat without bones or veins, by-products, grains, vegetables, herbs, eggs. It was wholly excluded from the diet of an Australian Mist sweet, salty, spicy, and food from the human table. As a treat, it is acceptable to give a piece of cheese.
