Origin History

Historians consider the ancestors of the dog breeds that accompanied nomadic tribes during the great migration of peoples. Kuvasz was used to protect the house and graze livestock. In Turkic, Kuvasz means “guardian”. Many years ago, this breed was valued by aristocrats and royal families because it was their dog that often accompanied them.

Nowadays, the dog is used as an excellent guard and as a loyal companion of the whole family.

Appearance

The Hungarian Kuvasz is a healthy and large breed of dog. The animal has a well-proportioned and robust skeleton.

The height at the withers of males reaches almost 80 centimeters. The bitches are slightly lower. The weight of the males ranges from 50 to 60 kilograms. Bitches weigh about 55 kilograms.

With full exercise, Hungarian Kuvasz can be kept in the apartment. On walks, the dog is calm, ignoring other animals and people. But sometimes it can chase small animals and cats. Owners need to punish the dog for such behavior. But it should be remembered that physical force will not teach the dog how you can and cannot do.

Care

Kuvasz has a medium-length coat. It should be brushed twice a week. During the molting period – more often. The animal should be washed as it gets dirty, but not more often than once or twice a month.

The dog owner needs to keep his ears and his tooth clean.

Training

The Hungarian Kuvasz needs nurturing and socialization. The animal tends to be independent. This can play into the hands of inexperienced owners.

If the owner has a bad attitude, it is not necessary to start training. The dog has a very subtle feeling for humans. For practical training, you must have wisdom, patience and never be rude to the dog. Encouragement and intellectual stimulation are critical to good dog training.

Kuvasz is prone to conditions such as osteochondrosis, hip dysplasia, and gastric torsion.

Nutrition

A dog as large as a cougar must have a balanced diet. But at the same time, dogs of this breed are unpretentious about food. Unlike other healthy and large species, the food portion of a Kuvasz can be much smaller.

If the owner has chosen to feed a by-product, then vegetables and cottage cheese should be added to the diet.

The Kuvasz must have constant access to clean drinking water.
