Origin History

The Kromfohrländer is a young breed of German ornamental dog. After World War II, a young German woman, Ilse Schleifenbaum, accepted a shaggy dog as a gift from American soldiers. The little pet was a cross between a fox terrier and a large Vandriessche Griffon. The neighbors liked his temperament so much; he was so cute and charismatic that it was decided to cross him with a girl Breton Basset Griffon to continue the breed. The hopes of the owners were one hundred percent fulfilled by the first litter. The puppies were born an exact copy of their father. The new breed was named after the Krumme Furhe mountain range, which rises in Germany’s northwest – the Kromforländer. It took ten years for breeders to create the breed’s standard, and in 1955 the Fédération Cynologique Internationale officially recognized the Kromfohrländer.

Today, representatives of this breed are extremely rare to find outside their homeland, sometimes found in Switzerland and Finland. But they are regulars in international dog sports competitions. Obedience, agility, Frisbee – the Kromfohrländer is great at whatever he learns. His physical attributes and quick learning curve are the key to successful performance and win in competitions.

Appearance

The Kromfohrländer is an energetic little dog breed, with a height at the withers not exceeding 46 cm. Very light and athletic, weighing no more than 16 kg. Two varieties of coat represent dogs of this breed. The stiff-haired Kromfohrländer is sure to have a “beard” and looks reminiscent of terriers. Straight-haired Kromfohrländers resemble spaniels; the length of hair does not exceed seven centimeters. The coloring is mostly white with brown spots of various shades. The Kromfohrländer is a solid and sturdy dog with a proportionately built body. The head is elongated; the ears are floppy, tight to the head, the beard and whiskers give the representatives of this breed an adult and seriousness.

It must be released on walks and intensive training. Kromfohrländer can be called an unpretentious dog. It is worth taking care of regular brushing of the coat for a presentable appearance, which molts profusely. They need to be inspected and brushed once a week for healthy teeth and eyes, and don’t forget to give the pet solid treats for brushing teeth. Your pet’s long ears can be a breeding ground for infections and bacteria, and they should be monitored every night. Walks should be varied with different tasks and sports games or exercises.

Training

The Kromfohrländer is just made for training. Dogs learn commands on the fly. They are recommended to be trained and taken to international dog competitions. Attention and intelligence help them learn a large number of commands. Success and victories in training depend largely on the owner. The pet must trust and obey the leader. For praise and goodies, Kromfohrländer is ready to move mountains. Obedience, agility, Frisbee – all canine activities are up to him. There’s no need to use a leash while exercising or walking; these dogs usually stick to their owners and don’t run anywhere.

Common Diseases

The breed is prone to joint and knee problems, and the hanging shape of the ears creates favorable conditions for the development of inflammation. Kromfohrländers may suffer from the following hereditary conditions: cystinuria, epilepsy; patella dislocation; keratosis; Itzenko-Cushing’s disease; and renal failure. With good care and nutrition, Kromfohrländers are virtually disease-free. Life expectancy is 12-14 years.

Nutrition

Kromfohrländer, despite his small weight and height, likes to eat a lot. His size, one and a half, is just enough to fill up after an intense workout for a dog. When choosing meat products for your pet, avoid fatty pork, as these animals share common parasites. Supplement the protein component of the menu with carbohydrates – boiled cereals in light porridge or crusty bread. The natural diet should be enriched by adding bone meal, fish oil, or special vitamin drops.
