Origin History

The Epagneul Breton or Brittany is a hunting breed bred in France back in the 17th century. It was named after the province of Brittany. The first written mention dates back to 1850 and belongs to the priest Davies. In 1900, the Epagneul Breton was already very popular in France and even took part in a dog show in Paris.

The breed was officially recognized, and its standard approved a little later, in 1907. The first dog registered by cynologists was an Epagneul named Boy. A year earlier, Cavalry Major and veterinarian P. Grand-Chavin had created the dog’s first detailed description.

Appearance

The Epagneul Breton is a medium-sized dog with a robust and muscular body. The head is medium length, round. The muzzle is sharp. The nose is brown or pink. The ears are not long, hanging. The eyes are deep-set and protected by bushy eyebrows.

The limbs of the dog are muscular, medium-sized. The tail of the Epagneul Breton is short, as is the hair on it. The coat is not short and thick, without an undercoat. The color is white with red, white with black, or white with brown.

On the other hand, Brittany has excellent hunting qualities. The dog is very energetic, takes the trail well. The dog almost never gets tired, can hunt for 9-10 hours in a row. If you do not satisfy the dog’s high need for activity, obedience problems may appear. All because of excessive energy.

Care

It is best to keep Brittany in a country house. Since the dog needs constant walks in the fresh air. At least an hour a day should be given to physical activity.

The coat is easy to care for. Daily brushing is enough, as well as bathing once a month. After hunting in thickets, carefully inspect the dog and remove thorns and other debris from its fur. Clean the eyes of the Epagneul Breton daily. Don’t forget to inspect and clean your pet’s ears. You should also trim your pet’s claws three times a month.

Training

Brittany is a brilliant and obedient dog. These qualities make it easy to train. In terms of intelligence, the dog is among the 20 most intelligent dogs. Therefore, the Espagnol easily performs any task and quickly learns. In any case, it is not recommended to yell and use force towards the dog. Otherwise, the dog may become fearful and shut down. Only a gentle attitude and regular and correct training should bring out the best in your dog. Early socialization and regular exercise will make the Espagnol a true hunter.

Common Diseases

Brittany is generally in good health. Common diseases:

  • hip dysplasia;
  • dioecious lupus erythematosus;
  • epilepsy;
  • eye and ear infections.

Particular attention should be paid to your dog’s floppy ears, which are often clogged with debris and moisture. To avoid inflammation and later deafness, regular cleaning is necessary. The same can be said for your pet’s eyes. Inspect them daily and clean them as needed.

Nutrition

The diet of Brittany is worth special attention. Dogs of this breed are prone to obesity. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the ration carefully and control the portions. For the first six months, the dog is fed three times a day. Then twice a day, up to the age of two years. After that, just once a day.

It is vital to feed your pet at the same time and in the same place. Preference should be given to professional foods. As they contain a full range of vitamins and minerals vital for a healthy and agile dog.
