Origin History

The Epagneul Breton or Brittany is a hunting breed bred in France back in the 17th century. It was named after the province of Brittany. The first written mention dates back to 1850 and belongs to the priest Davies. In 1900, the Epagneul Breton was already very popular in France and even took part in a dog show in Paris.

The breed was officially recognized, and its standard approved a little later, in 1907. The first dog registered by cynologists was an Epagneul named Boy. A year earlier, Cavalry Major and veterinarian P. Grand-Chavin had created the dog’s first detailed description.

Appearance

The Epagneul Breton is a medium-sized dog with a robust and muscular body. The head is medium length, round. The muzzle is sharp. The nose is brown or pink. The ears are not long, hanging. The eyes are deep-set and protected by bushy eyebrows.
