Origin History

The Gończy Polski was the result of a cross between French bloodhounds and local hunting dogs. The first mention of the breed dates back to the XIII century. A detailed description first appeared in hunting books in the nineteenth century.

The Polish Hunting Dog did not have much luck during World War II; almost all the purebred population was destroyed. The breed was restored thanks to the efforts of an ardent hunter, Colonel Jozef Pavlusiewicz.

Appearance

The Gończy Polski is a dog with a powerful extended body and muscular neck. The head is heavy, and the muzzle is long. The hound has a strong jaw. A characteristic feature is a pronounced transition from forehead to muzzle. The back, as well as the chest, is wide and long. The abdomen is slightly taut. The limbs are also muscular and strong. The tail is saber-shaped, long, low set.

The coat of the Polish Hunting Dog is dense, medium length, with a thick undercoat. The color is usually cheprak or black with tinges. There may be white spots of irregular shape on the chest, muzzle, and tail. The eyes are dark brown and oblique.

When the pet starts shedding, it is important to brush it with a medium-hard brush twice a week. You should bathe the four-legged dog rarely, once every 2-3 months. All for the sake of preserving the protective layer on the coat.

Training

The Gończy Polski is a very capable dog that is easy to train. The dog is logical and quickly gets into the process. The main thing is not to be harsh with the pet and carry out various training with him. A playful format is ideal; this way, the dog will be more interesting and enjoyable to train. Don’t raise your pet’s voice or use brute force in any case. With a caring attitude, the dog will be obedient and learn the commands as quickly as possible.

Don’t forget that the four-legged one needs plenty of space and constant exercise. The Polish Hunting Dog is a born hunter. Accordingly, an important component will be its participation in a real hunt.

It is also necessary to include vitaminized preparations, mineral supplements, and animal fats in the pet’s diet. These components are critical in winter when the dog’s body lacks vital vitamins.
