Origin History

The dog was bred purely for work. Foxhound owners needed a small dog that was easy to handle on the hunt had a loud bark and could run fast for long distances. So the brave and determined Foxhounds were born.

For a long time, they, along with their fellow Smooth Fox Terriers, were not distinguished as different breeds, but that all changed in 1876. That’s when the breed standard first appeared.

The homeland of these dogs in England. The name “Terra” literally translates as “land”. Every terrier must be able to hunt and climb into the caves of animals.

Appearance

The physique is strong, harmonious. The format of the skull is flat, smoothly passing from forehead to muzzle. The eyes are small, dark in color. Bright eyes are a disadvantage. The ears are triangular in shape, slim, dangling; the tips turned to the cheekbones.

The back is strong, straight, not very long. The neck is strong and long. The tail is usually cropped, but in its natural position, it is high up. The dogs are about 30-40 cm tall and weigh about 8-10 kg.

Wool is thick, very stiff, medium size. There is a soft undercoat. Color comes in white, white with red or black spots.

They are distrustful of strangers, so they can correctly perform the function of a home guard. They have a loud bark, so they will always warn their owner of danger.

Even though this dog is very fond of family and quickly becomes attached to it, it is better not to leave them with small children because due to carelessness, they can hurt. They have an excellent defensive reaction; if children will be naughty and tease the dog, they, in turn, will defend themselves.

Care

The Wire Fox Terrier can live in an apartment if you provide excellent and regular walks. Every day try to walk your dog at least twice and do active games, lots of running, and training.

The good thing about this pet is that it hardly ever sheds. But for the coat to look nice, it should be brushed with a special brush once a week. A specialist can trim the hair. If the hair is cut in time, it changes its structure, becomes soft, and can change its color.

It is important to check the condition of the ears, eyes, and mouth regularly. The eyes can be wiped once a week with tea brew, and the ears can be gently cleaned with an ear stick.

To prevent dental disease, it is recommended to give special hard treats that clean plaque from the teeth. Claws do not always shrink on their own, so they need to be trimmed regularly to prevent them from hurting people and disturbing the pet itself.

Training

The Wire Fox Terrier is an excellent athlete. He can compete with other dogs in different games. For example, in agility, dog frisbee. Teaching commands to a dog is not easy. Because they always want to dominate and be leaders.

You must show your pet who his master is and not allow even the smallest pranks from an early age. Communication during training should be strict but not aggressive. Praise and tasty rewards are great motivation.
