Origin History

The Cyclades archipelago is the native land of the Aegean cat breed. They can boast of ancient history, as these wonderful spotted animals have existed on these islands for thousands of years. The undoubted proof of it is the remains of Aegean cats found by archaeologists, which lived 10,000 years ago. Aegean cats lived in the ports – it was convenient because the fishermen can always find a few small fish for the furry animals. It seems reasonable to assume that some of these cats migrated to mainland Greece on fishing and trading vessels over the years. Fishers also valued Aegean cats, for they are famous for their hunting instincts in stalking and harassing rodents. There is speculation that Turkish Angora cats are related to Aegean cats, but there is no confirmation.

In their homeland, Greece, Aegean cats are very popular. They have settled not only in coastal areas but also throughout the country. Cats breed quietly in natural conditions; they have never had difficulty in feeding.

Despite the Greeks’ love for cats, they are not as common in other countries. The thing is that only 20 years ago, scientists set out to create a standard for the Aegean cat breed. Few enthusiastic amateurs do serious breeding of Aegean kittens for their distribution outside Greece.

Appearance

It can be said that the Aegean has a typical cat structure. The cat has a strong torso, proportional solid limbs. The body is large, but the animal does not lose its elegance and agility of movement. Paws with rounded pads and sharp claws are what helps the cat catch fish and mice. The tail is long, unbent, and smooth. The color of the coat is varied, but the dominant tone is white without yellowing. The presence of a variety of stains on the muzzle or back is allowed. Purebred representatives of the Aegean cats are bicolor or tricolor. Aegean cat is an inhabitant of southern areas, so its undercoat is not thick.

The head of the Aegean cat is trapezoidal. The cheekbones and chin are pointed. Expressive eyes are almond-shaped, the iris palette is also a variety of colors. All shades of green and yellow are acceptable. The ears are medium-sized, triangular, and pointing upward.

If you have an apartment, then it is worth buying a cat tree so that the cat will not spoil the furniture and play. Do not forget about the standard hygiene procedures: brushing teeth, ears, claw trimming. Once a week, the cat’s hair should be combed out with a soft brush, and in summer, it should be done more often during molting. Aegean cats love to bathe, so water procedures with shampoo will be only for her pleasure.

Education

The Aegean cat is trainable – in many cases, they have been trained to do tricks. You can train your cat on the basic rules: go to the litter box only to go to the toilet and respond to a nickname. You can have peace of mind about the integrity of your furniture if you train your cat to sharpen her claws on the cat tree or outside. If she doesn’t get enough exercise in a day, she’s capable of turning everything upside down.

Common Diseases

Aegean cats have lived outside for thousands of years, so they have developed a strong immunity and good health in general. Some illnesses happen to all cats – digestive disorders, eye problems, and fleas. Like all animals, Aegean cats can be prone to obesity. With a balanced diet and hygienic procedures, the pet will please its family for many years to come.

Nutrition

The Aegean cat is not fussy about nutrition. She will be fine with the usual dry cat food. Once a week, you can spoil the cat with fish dishes. Sweet, spicy, and salty foods will not be typical for the pet – this should be avoided.
