Origin History

The Ural Rex Longhair is a small breed of aboriginal Russian cats. The first mentions of rex appeared in the first half of the twentieth century. Then curly-haired cats were popular in Ural villages and settlements. The ancestor of the breed is considered a cat named Vaska. He was born in 1988 in the city of Zarechny, Sverdlovsk region.

During the Great Patriotic War, the population of Ural Rexes declined severely. The breed was considered extinct. Work on it continued in Yekaterinburg. For the first time, Ural cats with curly hair were described by Russian felinologist Olga Mironova in 1991.

In 1997, several representatives of the breed were brought to Moscow for a complete study. And in 1999, the Ural Rex was officially registered. The International Cat Association WCF approved the breed standard in 2006. Unfortunately, the Ural Rex is considered a rare breed and is known only in its homeland. Small catteries in Dresden and Dortmund, Germany, are also known.

Appearance

The Ural Rex Longhair is a medium-sized cat with an unusual curly coat. The physique is strong, well-proportioned, and with well-developed musculature. The head has the shape of a wide wedge. The muzzle is wide and rounded. The forehead is also slightly rounded. The cheekbones are well emphasized.

The eyes are almond-shaped. The color of the eyes can be any. The eyes are spread out slantwise. The upper eyelid is elongated and straightened, while the lower is rounded. The ears are not large. The ears are high and erect, wide at the base; the tips are rounded. The limbs are slender and strong. The tail is not wide and of medium length, narrowing towards the end.

According to the standard, the hair of the Ural Rex is considered semi-long. It is obligatory to have a light wave. Interestingly, the characteristic curl of the breed is not noted in any other breed. It is this “wave” that makes the breed unique. The curl should be in the form of curls or spirals, an elongated wavy coat on the tail. The longest part of the coat may be less brightly colored. All colors are possible except chocolate and cinnamon. The most common are brown, red, blue, tortoiseshell, and cream.

The curly hair of the Ural Rex requires regular care. To keep the coat neat and tidy, it should be combed out twice a week with a soft brush. Owners note a slight tendency to molting. However, during these periods, it is better to trim the pet. Water treatments should not be performed more often than a few times every 3-4 months. Otherwise, stick to the standard hygienic recommendations. Brushing of ears, eyes, and claw trimming are recommended every 7-10 days.
