Origin History

From the name of the breed, we can guess that the homeland of the Bangkaew is Thailand. Namely, the village in the north-central part of the country – Bangkaew in the Bang-Rakam area. If the legend is to be believed, the breed appeared without human intervention. In the XV century, the Buddhist monastery Wat Bangkeu received a pregnant dog as a gift from a resident. However, it was impossible to establish who the father of the offspring was. There was only speculation that it could have been a golden jackal or a Thai dog that lived in the forest at the time.

Thanks to careful selection, the reference litter was bred in 1957. It was then that the Thai Bangkaew Dog became popular and also became the true heritage of the province of Phitsanulok. Around 1983, the breed was on the brink of extinction, but due to researchers, enthusiasts, and residents’ efforts, the “Return of the Bangkeo” foundation was established. This project has contributed to the revival of the breed. In 2011, the Thai Bangkaew Dog standard was adopted, and the International Canine Federation recognized the breed.

Appearance

The Thai Bangkaew Dog is well-coordinated, medium in size, and square in shape. The head is well-proportioned, wide, wedge-shaped. The ears are standing, pointed, triangle-shaped. Strong and muscular neck. The tail is fluffy, upswept with a curve on the back; it is moderately long. The coat is of medium length, double, and with a soft undercoat. Symmetrical head color with spots on the ears and eyes, dark mask with a white gap on the muzzle is preferable. Monochrome color is unacceptable.

The Thai Bangkaew Dog can adapt well to the owner’s lifestyle and is also very good at sensing his moods. He loves walks and spending time outdoors, so keeping him in his own home is preferable. However, if you are willing to provide your pet with regular long walks, the dog will feel comfortable even in an apartment. Thai Bangkaew Dog tends to lead more in relation to other animals, but he is more obedient and reserved with humans. Keep in mind that the breed is brilliant, which means it can take cunning in those moments that will benefit it.

Care

As with other dogs in the Spitz group, the only difficulty keeping them is to take regular care of their pet’s luxurious coat. Pay a little more attention and time to comb. Comb the hair with a special brush once every few days and during molting periods – every day. It is not recommended to bathe often so as not to worsen the skin and coat condition. Otherwise, only standard recommendations for general hygiene: it is enough to check the eyes and ears once a week. Nails should be trimmed a few times a month.

Training

The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a dog that will gladly listen to its master and perform all tasks. It has a well-developed memory and concentration, which means that training problems will not arise at all. Interestingly, Thai Bangkaew Dog is often used in different sports and competitions: Frisbee, officiating, agility and others.

Common Diseases

The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a hardy dog with a strong immune system, but there are many diseases they are prone to:

• various eye diseases (cataract, progressive retinal atrophy);
• hip dysplasia;
• stomach congestion;
• ear infections;
• oncology;
• liver disease;
• cryptorchidism.

Nutrition

Thai Bangkaew Dog diet must be balanced. If you are a supporter of natural food, the diet should be dominated by meat. It is also desirable to add vitamins, vegetables, and fruits to complete nutrition, and the pet was harmoniously developed and healthy.
