The Spanish Scenthound is similar to the Celtic dogs and members of the St. Hubert breed. Another name for these four-legged dogs is Sabueso Español, and they are first mentioned in documents of the 13th century. Spanish Scenthounds were used in packs when hunting-the dogs were trendy during the Renaissance.

The population of the breed declined noticeably when Spain imposed a taboo on sled hunting. The breed began to revive in the twentieth century. The Spanish Scenthound standard was first published in 1982 and recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1957.
