Origin History

The Posavac Hound was named after the breed that originated, the Sava River valley in Bosnia. It is not known for sure from whom the dog originated. According to the fifteenth-century frescoes, we can assume that the hound’s ancestor was an ancient Croatian breed.

Cynologists officially recognized the Posavac Hound in 1955. Approval of the breed standard came a little later, in 1973.

Appearance

The Posavac Hound is an excellent built, muscular dog. The body is elongated, strong, slightly dry. The back and chest are wide; the ribs are convex. On a massive muscled neck sits a long narrow head, along which hang thin flat ears. The dog has a wide black or dark brown nose lobe. The eyes are large and dark.

The hound’s limbs are also muscular and strong, with round, dense paws. The coat is short, stiff, and thick. The color is spotted on a yellowish background. There are white markings on the head, chest, and neck. The tail is densely covered with wool of medium length. It is saber-shaped and thick at the base.

Character

The Posavac Hound is a kind and gentle dog, totally devoted to its owner. Due to its character traits, it is very obedient and malleable. It is a family dog, which treats children and other family members with great warmth. The pet loves to play and be the center of attention. To strangers, the dog is indifferent or slightly distrustful. It should not be forgotten that the Posavac Hound is a free-loving hunter. Therefore, it is categorically impossible to lock the dog in four walls.

Care

The Posavac Hound, like most hunting dogs, is not particularly suited to life in an urban apartment. The mobile dog needs a lot of space and constant physical activity.

The hound’s short, stiff coat does not require any special care. Combing it with a stiff brush once a day is enough. It is also important to monitor the condition of the dog’s ears to avoid otitis. Do not forget about preventive vaccinations, including rabies.

Training

The Posavac Hound is an obedient and persistent dog. Therefore, there should be no problems with training. However, like all hunting dogs, the hound has such a character trait as stubbornness. The main thing is not to be harsh with the dog and to train it in various ways. The dog willingly learns something new. In no case do not raise your pet’s voice or use brute force. With an affectionate attitude, the dog will be obedient and learn commands as quickly as possible.

The four-legged dog needs space and constant physical activity. Since the Posavac Hound is primarily a hunting dog, participation in real hunting is very important for the pet’s development.

Common Diseases

The Posavac Hound is a healthy and robust dog. Hereditary diseases are not inherent in them. Common ailments:

  • hip dysplasia;
  • urolithiasis;
  • infectious diseases of the ears.

An unbalanced diet can be hazardous to your dog’s health. It is important to make sure he has adequate minerals and vitamins in his diet from infancy. To avoid otitis media, your pet’s ears, which are prone to inflammation, should be cleaned regularly.

Nutrition

This dog needs a completely healthy diet, as do all hounds. Quality protein products should be an essential component. Also, mineral supplements and animal fats should be included in the pet’s diet. These components are especially important in winter when the dog’s body lacks vital vitamins.

The main part of the diet should be lean meat, preferably beef. Do not forget about vegetables, cereals, and greens. Boil thick soups for your pet, but serve boiled meat separately. In the absence of meat dishes in the diet, dairy products are vital. Bone meal, salt, and synthetic supplements will replenish your dog’s mineral and vitamin composition.
