Ojos Azules are a quiet breed. Blue-eyed cats rarely behave modestly, not demanding unnecessary attention to their person. They can sit quietly in a corner and do not disturb anybody with their meow. Representatives of the feline genus with blue and cornflower eyes are always charming and chic looking. Ojos Azules is a young breed, which appeared in the late twentieth century on its own, with Siamese cats not genetically related in any way. In Spanish, Ojos Azules means blue eyes.
The first Ojos Azules in history was named Vasilek and came from the United States, New Mexico. Without any interference from specialists, the cat mated on its own and produced two litters per year. In the late 80s, felinologists became interested in this unique cat and began to conduct research. Scientists confirmed that the gene found in the blue-eyed cat and its offspring was unique.
Ojos Azules is a rare cat breed; in 1992, there were only ten officially recognized purebred carriers. In 2004 they gained the right to participate in international shows.
Representatives of the Ojos Azules cat breed stand out among other breeds because eye color and color are completely unrelated. The coat color of the Ojos Azules can be anything, but the less white, the better. Hair length can be short or long, and there is also a long-haired version of the breed, the Ojos Azules.
The eyes should be bright blue or blue. The breed’s standard allows heterochromia, one eye can be yellow or green, but then the tip of the tail must be white. Non-blue-eyed individuals also began to appear among breed representatives; they began to be called Oji latent.
These small cats weigh up to five pounds, but there are individuals and larger, there are no strict limits; it all depends on the conditions.
Ojos Azules are a quiet breed. Blue-eyed cats rarely behave modestly, not demanding unnecessary attention to their person. They can sit quietly in a corner and do not disturb anybody with their meow. They have warm feelings towards their owners and are rather faithful and affectionate. It is difficult for such cats to be left alone for a long time. Children and other animals are perceived as companions, with which you can quietly and peacefully play and sometimes lie together.
Representatives of the Ojos Azules breed can be short-haired or long-haired. However, nature has deprived them of an undercoat; it is quite liquid. It allows them to comb out hair falling out with a special rubber glove, but it will be enough just a few times a month.
You should create a special sheltered place for the cat where it can meditate or at least sleep. A scratching post will save your furniture from destruction, and it is advisable to trim the cat’s claws in time.
If you train Ojos Azules to walk on a leash, it will be very difficult to drag her home. Outside the apartment, they are always more interesting; their backyard origins make them felt. After every walk, you should check your pet for ticks.
No matter how you slice it, cats cannot learn commands or tricks at the level of dogs. The maximum that Ojos Azules can do is walk in a snake and stand on their hind legs. But it all depends on a good bond with the owner; intelligence and curiosity will help learn and perform small but cute tricks. A system of rewards works very well and quickly yields results. For example, teach the blue-eyed dog to turn off the light!
Ojos Azules have strong immunity and, with proper nutrition and proper care in general, can live 15-17 years; it’s a very good indicator for a cat considered a high-breed. Breeders of Ojos Azules should know that you can not cross two cats with blue eyes; otherwise, the owner risks getting sick, defective offspring with serious defects. It often happens that dead kittens are born from such a relationship. The choice of a mate should be approached responsibly. It is best to breed Ojos Azules with representatives of other breeds, then half of the offspring will have “correct” blue eyes. Another part of the kittens will be rejected for hair color, but overall they will be healthy. The breed is considered new; there is no data on diseases typical of this breed.
Cats of the Ojos Azules breed are undemanding when it comes to food. They have a strong stomach and can handle almost any food. But you should not do her harm with your own hands, do not give her fatty and salty food, because it will have a very bad effect on the liver and intestines.
Chicken, turkey, lean meat, vegetables should be given as natural food, and fish without bones can rarely be given. But for spayed cats, it is better to avoid such food, as fish can be harmful to them. With this diet regime, the pet will be active and healthy for many years. Pregnant and lactating cats need a special diet containing more vitamins and minerals.
Adult cats should be given soft food because their teeth wear down over the years, and they have difficulty chewing hard food. Ojos Azules is not the most active cat, so it is worth paying attention to the amount of food consumed so that these homebodies do not become obese.
