Features of the breed
History of Origin
The Welsh Terrier is derived from the black and tan terrier, which English farmers actively used in the 16th century. Dogs were taken with them on hunting trips, as they had excellent hunting qualities. They also caught rats, protected houses, and had work purposes.
For the first time, the club of fans of the breed was created in 1886, then the dogs already had their standard and began active breeding of purebred Airedale Terriers.
After World War II, the dogs made their way to various countries in Europe and became popular in the world. But did not arouse much interest among breeders. And only in the seventies of the last century began large-scale breeding of Welsh Terriers. It required bringing in purebred dogs from Sweden, Germany, and Finland, and then Soviet scientists could spread the dogs here.
Appearance: height, weight, fur, color
The Welsh Terrier is small, reaching a maximum height of 39 cm and 10 kg. The dog has a harmonious head, a moderate length muzzle, and well-emphasized facial features. The nose is most often black, and the eyes are small, almond-shaped.
The physique is compact; the back is short, the chest is broad. The hind legs are muscular and have long thighs, which makes them look massive. The tail was once bought, but now it is forbidden, and in a resting position, the tail is set high.
The Airedale Terrier’s hair is stiff, medium length; only two-tone color is allowed (black back and red paws, neck, belly, head). Gray markings are also possible. On the muzzle formed a small mustache and beard.
The dog has a strong and independent character. They love to be the center of attention, constantly need the care and love of their owner. They are not afraid of noisy companies. On the contrary – they will gladly be present during celebrations and never miss fun games.
Not aggressive toward people. However, the same cannot be said toward other dogs. The Welsh Terrier can scandalize other dogs, even if they are much larger than he is.
The pet is a bit cunning and needs a strong owner who will not be manipulated. The Welsh Terrier only listens to one family member, all others he respects and loves, but will not follow their commands.
Not suitable for those who prefer to spend their time quietly because, for representatives of this breed, active games and fun are essential. They treat children well, love to play with them, but if they see that the owner pays more time to them, they may become jealous. Do not forget that the Welsh Terrier is a small child who wants love and attention.
The Welsh Terrier can live in an apartment and a private home, but it is worth remembering that he needs to walk a lot and actively. At least twice a day for at least an hour, it is essential to give time to different physical activities.
Pets will enjoy running, playing with a ball, and Frisbee. Twice a year or once a month (if the dog participates in a show), you should trim the coat. Or periodically cut it yourself.
The good thing about the Welsh Terrier is that it does not shed. But still, for the proper condition of the skin, and coat should be brushed once a week with a special brush. Once a month, it is recommended to bathe the pet. Welsh Terrier likes to swim a lot so that you can equip a pool near the house for the dog in hot times.
The breed is cunning and not very prone to follow commands. Training can be hell for them.
You must be patient and combine exercise with play for training to work because these dogs love to play. It’s important to teach your puppy from an early age that you’re the boss, not him. Teach him the most straightforward commands and teach him his name. It’s recommended to choose areas where it’s just you and the dog, as they can get distracted a lot.
The dog has good health, but it is crucial to watch the exercise level because they can often become injured due to inattention. It is also important to check their eyes regularly because they may have eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma.
The Welsh Terrier can eat natural food or food. It is important to choose the best feeding option and stick to it. Vitamins can be added to the diet for better health.
