History of Origin
The origin of the Catahoula Leopard Dog is associated with the American state of Louisiana. More specifically, the Catahoula River, which means “sacred lake”. The first mention of the breed goes back to the 16th century. The animals helped local farmers to graze cattle. Also successfully accompanied people during the hunt.
According to history, the representatives were spread by the French settlers who came to America. The ancestors of the leopard dog are considered Mastiffs, Bloodhounds, Greyhounds, and Boserons. Some scientists are sure of the presence of wolf blood in the representatives of the Catahoula.
In 1979, the breed was officially recognized as a state symbol due to its search and rescue operations’ effectiveness. The English Kennel Club recognized the Cathouse in 1995. Today, the breed is not particularly popular. Most Catahoula Leopard Dogs have become established in their homeland. Single specimens are found in Holland, the Czech Republic, and Germany.
Appearance: height, weight, fur, color
The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a medium to large size dog. It depends on the breeding line. The animal is endowed with a chiseled and graceful figure. It is moderately lean and trims. The head is large and muscular. Sexual dimorphism is visible. The bite is a scissor type. Often representatives of the breed have eyes of different shades. It gives the Catahoula Leopard Dog extra showmanship.
The coat is short and single-layered. In the sixteenth century, the color of the dog allowed it to masquerade as the color of Louisiana forests and ponds. Therefore, the animals are recognized as the first helpers of farmers and hunters. The coat of the modern representative is most often red or marbled in color. It is not officially recognized as having more than 90% white coloration, and 70-90% is considered a serious disadvantage.
Representatives of the breed are calm, non-aggressive, and intelligent dogs. At the same time, they clearly distinguish who is their own and who is a stranger. In the second group, Catahoula Leopard Dogs have a calm attitude. They will not show aggression or displeasure to a stranger. Although the animal is affectionate and open with all family members, it considers one person – the owner – to be the main one. The Catahoula Leopard Dog obeys him unconditionally. For a family with small children, the breed is perfect. The dog can act as a nurse and look after the child. It easily finds contact with other animals.
In general, the breed is peaceful and friendly with everyone. They need socialization starting at two months of age. It helps not to be afraid of cats and other dogs and easily find a common language with the family.
Having a short and smooth coat does not require extreme care from the owner. Once a week, comb out the pet by wiping it with a towel or a wet hand. During active shedding, perform the procedure two to three times a week. The process is a Catahoula Leopard Dog can take a long time. Brush your pet’s teeth and eyes regularly. Remove wax buildup from the ear canals.
It cannot be easy to train a Catahoula Leopard Dog. If there is no experience in training, it is better to trust a professional. It is important to establish a bond between the pet and the owner immediately. Only then will he obey and follow commands. Dog treats and praise are suitable as motivation.
The Catahoula Leopard Dog is reasonably stubborn. Early familiarity with the world around him and regular training without aggression inspire the pet to obey complex commands. At the same time, the dog must know who the master is in the house. Keep your dog on a leash in open areas and public places. Congenital hunting qualities may show up at the most unexpected moment, and the dog will snap out of his seat.
Catahoula Leopard Dogs are animals in good health. They are most often prone to joint dysplasia. To prevent the disease, do not overfeed your pet and provide regular exercise. Demodex, skin allergies, eye, and ear infections can occur. At the first symptoms, you should see your veterinarian.
Meat and by-products should constitute the main part of the Catahoula Leopard Dog’s diet: 40 g per 1 kg of weight for young animals and three to four times less for adults. The dog likes porridges, vegetables, dairy products, and eggs. It is worth giving up sweets, flour, and spicy foods. Pasta, potatoes, and beans are rarely allowed. If you often consume these products, you may develop problems with the gastrointestinal tract. Don’t forget supplements to help your dog feel more energetic and healthy. Match the food to your pet’s age. It’s best to opt for super-premium dry food designed for dogs with an active lifestyle.
