Features of the breed
History of Origin
The Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog comes from the mountains of Romania. It was bred for shepherding work – protection of herds from large wild animals. There is a version that a distant relative of the dog is a wolf.
The breed is considered an achievement of the Romanians, and the dog is highly valued and widely used in the country. It is also believed that the Romanian shepherd can even stand up to a bear on its own. It does not occur very often in the world. The top country where the pets live is considered Romania.
In 1934 the National Institute first recognized the breed, and in 2005 the breed was recognized by the International Association of Cynologists.
Appearance: height, weight, fur, color
Dogs have sexual dimorphism: males are significantly larger than females. Males are 65-73 cm tall, and females are 59-67 cm tall. The weight ranges from 35 to 70 kg. The main thing is that the dog does not seem fat in appearance, so the weight depends on the height.
The pets’ fur is thick, coarse, and very warm. There is also a dense undercoat. The hair is shorter on the head and front of the paws. On the neck and tail, hair is thick and long. Colors come in various colors; the main thing is that they blend with the primary white color. The muzzle of the dogs resembles a wolf, hence the theory of their kinship. Despite its large size, weight, and strength, the Romanian Carpathian shepherd dog’s gait is very graceful and graceful.
The Character
Dogs have excellent, instantaneous reactions, allowing them to navigate quickly and protect their home and master. They are distrustful of strangers, angry, can bark a lot, attack strangers who might harm. Therefore, it is considered one of the best guards.
But anger and aggression are shown only to strangers. If you live with the dog, you can not worry, as he loves children, ready to play with them and protect them.
A pet needs authority from an early age. If you have a strong character and are willing to subdue and educate this big and strong dog, you can not worry about difficulties. However, this is a breed of rather stubborn and proud dogs.
This dog obeys only one owner. It does not tolerate restrictions on freedom of movement, so it will be challenging to live in an apartment. It is very active and needs exercise.
Care
The best place for a Carpathian Shepherd would be a country house with a free area around it. It is not worth it for an apartment, as the dog needs a lot of space to live in.
You should take your pet for regular walks and give plenty of exercises. If possible, if there is access to large, uninhabited areas, let him run around without a leash.
Hair requires combing with a special brush 1-2 times a week. When the stage of molting begins, scratch every day with a stiff brush. Bathe once every three months or depending on dirt. Regularly check the area between the toes for land. Wipe the eyes with a unique cleanser after consulting your veterinarian.
Systematically trim claws and wash ears.
Training
To train your pet well, you need to have patience and preferably seek help from a professional. A sheepdog can perform many commands concerning guarding, but only a professional can teach it.
The dog will obey and follow commands only if you are his authority and leader. Otherwise, their independence and hunting instincts will begin to show.
First of all, you should train the dog not to attack without the owner’s signal. The breed is quite aggressive and, without the right training, can show a lot of anger towards others.
Common diseases
Romanian Carpathian shepherds are hardy to any weather conditions, have robust health, and strong immunity.
Try to get regular vaccinations against various parasites and inoculations.
Dogs have very long hair, and they can often hide mites, so it is recommended to treat pets with select products.
Nutrition
It is recommended to feed exceptional food twice a day and give the dog constant access to water. Part of the diet should consist of meat. Cereals can be provided for a change.
