History of Origin
The dog was bred in the early twentieth century by Brazilians, using European dogs. Students from Brazil very often went to study at universities in Europe, where they met European women and married. After they married, they took them back to their homeland and built families. European women often took their pets with them on the trip – small terrier dogs, fox terriers.
In Brazil, these dogs were crossed with local dogs, and thus the Brazilian Terrier was born. In the beginning, the Brazilian Terrier was used for hunting and for controlling animals on farms.
The dog had excellent leadership skills, good stamina for bad weather conditions. Now the dog is used as a companion, family pet, and guardian.
Appearance: height, weight, fur, color
The Brazilian Terrier has a very slender and harmonious build, medium size, slightly square format. The head has a triangular shape, which narrows to the muzzle. From the forehead to the muzzle, there is a fairly pronounced transition. The dog has a black nose with pronounced nostrils. The eyes are large, round, widely spaced. It can be brown, gray, blue, green.
The ears are pointed, standing at eye level, with the ends covering the ear cavity and pointing toward the eyes. The body is bold, healthy, and muscular. The tail of the dog is short, cropped. It is not tall – 33-40 cm and weighs up to 10 kg.
The coat is short, tight to the body, can be white with spots. There are tan, reddish spots on the muzzle, above the eyes, and on the ears.
The Brazilian Terrier is very cheerful, energetic, spends most of his time in motion, very active, and loves to play a lot. It is perfect for athletes because it is willing to keep them company during jogging, walking, or training.
It is better not to get people who have a sedentary lifestyle because these pets will not let you lie still if they want to go outside.
They are great home guards because they are very observant and loyal. They have excellent attention span and memory, which helps in training. They are distrustful of strangers but have a perfect memory. If you introduce them to a person, they will remember him for the rest of his life.
The Brazilian Terrier always strives to please its owner. He can perform various circus and acrobatic tricks to attract attention and praise.
The dog is very active; it can be challenging to keep it in an apartment. A country house with private grounds is best. But even if the dog spends a lot of time outside, it still needs a long walk. On walks, be sure to play, exercise, and allow him to run long distances.
A dog’s coat does not require much care. You should wipe your dog every other day with a damp towel to remove loose hair during the molting period. At other times, it is enough to brush once a week.
A pet’s teeth can often be their weak point, so it’s worth paying attention to them and checking them regularly, giving them a special chewy treat to keep their mouth healthy.
Dogs are quick to learn and memorize commands. But the disadvantage of the breed is its hyperactivity. They have trouble sitting in one place for a long time; they are often distracted by foreign objects and forget that they have been given a command.
It is recommended to encourage them with treats. It will help keep the pet’s attention.
Diseases that can be observed in the Brazilian Terrier:
- hip dysplasia;
Deafness can affect old dogs; it is not seen in young dogs. To keep your dog from getting sick, visit the doctor regularly, get vaccinated, and treated for parasites on time.
