Origin History

The origin of the breed is considered a historical area in northern France – Picardy. Just because of its primary habitat, the breed is called the Blue Picardy Spaniel. The region is located near the suburbs of Paris and covers the beaches of Somme Bay.

The first mention of the breed dates back to 1512. At that time, Louis XII thanked in a letter and spoke of “Several blue Picardy spaniels”. Researchers claim that the breed is descended from the Picardy spaniel and the English setter. But there are some breeders’ opinions that the Blue Picardy Spaniel is simply a color mutation of the common Picardy Spaniel. That is why the Blue Picardy Spaniel was not considered an independent breed until 1937. Closer to the 80s, the breed was recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club. And in 1987, it finally got the breed standard and official recognition by the International Canine Federation.

Throughout the world, the Blue Picardy Spaniel has not gained much popularity. For the most part, the breed is known to hunters in France and Canada. Its black color is not as much in demand, which cannot be said about its closest relative, the Picardy Spaniel.

Appearance

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a tall, graceful dog with extraordinary zeal for the hunt. He gives the impression of an intelligent and graceful dog when you look at him. The physique is harmonious and well-muscled. The head is a broad, very expressive transition from forehead to muzzle. The ears are set quite low, hanging. The eyes are dark in color; they look attentive. A long straight back, deep chest. Ribs beautifully curved. The abdomen is taut.

The dog has strong limbs. The tail is medium length and straight. The coat is long and thick, hard to the touch, and all over the body is “wave”. Acceptable colors: Black and white with all kinds of markings and gray-blue cast. Red spots are unacceptable.

The Blue Picardy Spaniel has an overly kind character and a good attitude even to strangers.

Care

The care of the Blue Picardy Spaniels is generally not different from any hunting dog’s usual care. Due to its moisture-repellent properties and dense texture, it is sufficient to comb out the pet’s coat several times a week. Pay special attention to the ears of the Blue Picardy Spaniel. Because they hang down, dirt and moisture can accumulate in them. It leads to hearing complications and inflammation. Bathe your pet only as needed. Active dogs tend to clip their claws on their own. If that’s not enough, have them trimmed monthly.

Training

Owners of the Blue Picardy Spaniel note its quick learning ability and good tendency to train. French hunters appreciate the Blue Picardy Spaniel for its perseverance in work, sharp sense of smell, and lightning-fast reaction. Effectively hunts even in difficult terrain – on water and in dense swamps. All commands are memorized and executed swiftly.

Because of its strong attachment to its owner, it does not tolerate loneliness. The Blue Picardy Spaniel’s attitude toward other animals is friendly. However, he still needs early socialization because the hunting instinct in dealing with small animals can take over.

Common Diseases

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a breed of dog with excellent immunity and good health. There are only a few diseases that can be characteristic of the breed:

• inflammatory processes of the ears (in the neglected form can lead to otitis media);
• hip dysplasia.

Nutrition

For a healthy skeleton, your pet’s diet should be balanced and include adequate protein. Feed him regularly and do not feed him “from the table” under any circumstances.
